It received its current look in the last renovation in 1906 by the winning project of a budapestian designer Ladislav Baumhorn. Originally there was only a wooden building built shortly after the arrival of the first Jewish families in Mikulas in 1731. Growing Jewish community decided in 1842 to build a new synagogue. This one-storey brick building was completed in 1846.
It was damaged by fire several times. Certainly the capacity reasons lead the Jewish community, at the beginning of our century, to its reconstruction. The designer brought up the concept of maintaining the old architecture. In 1977 the synagogue was bought by the Municipal National Committee in Liptovsky Mikulas. For several years it served as a storehouse for various materials. During those years the original interior was severely damaged, almost destroyed.
Today there are preserved only in-line wooden benches in the galleries. After 1989 the Municipal Authority invested considerable resources to the rescue works. In June 1992 a memorial plaque was unveiled on the facade of the synagogue, dedicated to the victims of the holocaust, more than 800 Jews from Liptovsky Mikulas were taken to concentration camps. The author is the academic boards’ painter Michal Kern. Since 1998 the synagogue belongs to the Headquarters of the Jewish Religious Communities in Bratislava.
