Classification: moderately difficult all-day high-mountain tour with great altitude difference Elevation gain: 1 409 m Map: Liptov-turistická mapa 1:100 000
The length of the tour predetermines it for summer months, but the long stretch of the Jánska dolina valley runs on comfortable asphalt road, which can be also walked in falling dark. The Chata gen.M.R.Štefánika cottage provide shelter and refreshment in emergency.
Basic route: The trip start at the village of Liptovský Ján (634 m) and the first stretch coincides with that of the tour “The Ohnište Mt.”. Comfortable ascent following the blue mark (2626) up the bizarre karstic Jánska dolina valley will carry you to the Pred Bystrou gamekeeper´s lodge (889 m). Stick to the axis of the main valley which is called Štiavnica, and continue on the blue marked trail. The road sticks to the left bank of the brook in the lower part of the valley. It changes into the path passing trough the clearings and dwarf pine forest above the hut of Brenkus. At the glacier depression between the ridge of the Ďumbier and Králičky Mts. the path ascends to a steep slope. You can have some rest and refreshment at the Chata gen.M.R.Štefánika cottage (1 728 m) after this long ascent. Then you will make use of a short stretch of the ridge trail marked in red (E8, 0801). Traversing path will carry you to the crossroads at the Krúpove sedlo saddle (1 922 m). Short steep detour from the crossroads leads to the top of the Ďumbier Mt. (2 043 m). After having enjoyed the unique view from the tallest peak of the Nízke Tatry Mts. you can return to the crossroads at the Krúpove sedlo seddle tracing the way of the ascent. Continue from the saddle to the north following the yellow mark (8620), which copies the side ridge of the Krakova hoľa Mt. Unusual views from the descending path of the split northern slopes of the Ďumbier Mt. dropping to the heads of the Bystrá and Ludárova dolina valleys are also rewarding. Do not miss the views from the scarcely discernible elevation called Kráľov stôl (1 775 m). The descent is rather steep at the beginning, then it becomes milder. Avoid the elevation on the side ridge of the Prašivá Mt. (1 667 m) and descend to the shallow saddle of Salašky (1 556 m). Slightly ascending path leads now to the slope of the Tanečnica Mt. (1 681 m). It avoids the top hidden amids dwarf pine growth. Yellow hiking marks will carry you as far as the Javorie saddle (1 487 m), behind which the majestic Krakova hoľa Mt. towers. Turn right onto the red marked hiking trail (0861). Continue first on the steep forest path and cart road to the gamekeeper´s lodge Pred Bystrou where you started the ascent ibn the valley of Štiavnica. Return following the familiar blue-marked trail (2626) to Liptovský Ján.
Options: The quickest retreat from the tour after reaching the top of the Ďumbier Mt. is the return to the Chata gen.M.R.Štefánika cottage and the descent on the green trail to Trangoška (total 101/4 hours).
