Many come here during summer and winter season, others prefer the peaceful atmosphere of spring or autumn. No matter what season they may come here, the town has always a lot to offer.
The town takes pride in the rich history as the region of Liptovský Mikuláš was settled in the Bronze Age. The first written document about the town is dated from 1286. The broad history of Liptovský Mikuláš is nowadays documented in the Museum of Janko Kráľ. The town also takes pride in a number of public figures who were active here. According to the biographical list their number exceeds four hundred. Koloman Sokol is one of them. He was an outstanding graphic artist born in Liptovský Mikuláš. He had worked in the USA for many years. A part of his artistic work is exhibited in the gallery called The Center of Koloman Sokol.
Peter Michal Bohúň was another prominent figure active in Liptovský Mikuláš. He was an artist and a teacher. The second largest gallery in Slovakia bears his name today. The names of many natives are immortalized on the fountain of Metamorphosis situated in the heart of Liptovský Mikuláš in the square called Námestie osloboditeľov.
The historical center of the town attracts visitors by many monuments, such as the Church of Saint Mikuláš, majestic synagogue, the house called “Župný dom” as well as the former Jesuit monastery. This monastery is nowadays the residence of the Slovak Museum of Nature Protection and Speleology which maps the incredible variety of nature in Slovakia. Close to the mentioned museum the visitors can find the Museum of Liptov which depicts the history of hunting and fishing in this region reaching to the middle ages.
In addition, the town offers great sport opportunities: indoor swimming pool, bowling, squash, tennis courts, skiing tow as well as go-karts. Moreover, visitors can find here the largest aqua park in Slovakia situated on the periphery of the town. The large complex of thermal swimming pools, tube tracks and slides, the sports area, Tarzanland and the Western City remain a favorite destination for many visitors. Liptovský Mikuláš offers the rich cultural and sport life. The traditional events of the town are Mikuláš fair, “Stoličné dni”, Cultural summer, festival of pantomime PAN, various concerts in the synagogue, water slalom competitions such as the international slalom of the Tatras and Liptov region.
The competitions take place in the facilities of the water slalom resort (Areál vodného športu), which is the training center of the Olympic Games winners such as Michal Martikán and Elena Kaliská. The region of Liptovský Mikuláš is a very attractive part of Slovakia. The town is protected by mighty mountain ranges of the Low and West Tatras and the Chočské Hills. Hills and valleys invite tourists for hiking, cycling as well as for the winter sports. Liptovská Mara dam offers excellent conditions for water sports and it belongs to the most popular places for fishing.
In summer, the visitors are given the possibility of a cruise across the dam. A number of caves, thermal pools, sights of folk architecture, possibility of paragliding, rafting, and horseback riding make the Liptov region a wonderful place for spending fabulous vacation throughout the year.
